Japan J Select

I have been quoted in the February 2007 issue of magazine J Select, alongside fellow Canadians Jean Snow and Sonia Chow. The article is about blogging, with our hows and whys and also pros and cons.

What about an excerpt for those of who find it slightly inconvenient to visit Tower Shibuya?

Here are my raw answers to the writer's questions, I guess that's the best I can do here. :) This is really not Japan-related at all, by the way.

> 1. How do you set up a blog and keep it running?

The easiest way is to use a hosted service, such as TypePad or Blogger, which require no technical skills. I choose to host my Movable Type blog on my own site. Doing so does create some technical overhead, but it's part of my fun.

> 2. What are the pros and cons of having a blog? What do you get out of it?

The biggest pro for me is to be able to communicate with the people I know, and sometimes get to know new people with common interests too. As for cons, it can be a lot of trouble to deal with related nuisances such as spam.

> 3. How do you attract people to read it?

Although I'm not one of those who blog daily, I try to post new content on a regular basis so that people keep coming back. I also do my best to include interesting photos.

> 4. How does it benefit your business?

N/A

> 5. What is your motivation for having a blog?

I like to use it as sort of a journal, writing about and posting photos of places I went, things I did. This makes it an easy medium for giving news to family and friends all at once.
Also, it is often useful to be able to search for keywords through all of what I've written before.

> 6. Why should someone go to all the effort?

I don't think someone should go out of their way to blog or to do so everyday. It should be done for fun, and not feel like a particular effort.

> 7. Is it worth it?

I've had my own Web site for a long time before, and turning it into a blog in 2003 was a decision that I definitely don't regret.

> 8. What direction do you think blogging might take in the future?

I think it will become easier to blog in all kinds of media and from more types of devices.
