Japan Photo Tokyo Meiji-kōen flea market and Harajuku

Today I met Jean-Robert once again, to guide him and his friends to a flea market held in Meiji-kōen (near Sendagaya station on Sōbu line). With him were Melleny Melody, a performer/artist/producer/label owner from Toronto, and also a couple of colleagues who live in Montreal.

We got to the flea market around 13:30, and looked through stuff until about 15:00 when it was closing. Sadly nobody could find much stuff to their taste, and at a price they were willing to pay... Melleny was tempted by some QP dolls (similar to these) and Peko-chan dolls, but they ended up being antiques at rather exorbitant prices.

I managed to recommend a few CDs of Japanese artists (Modern Choki Chokies and Crazy Ken Band) to Jean-Robert.

Then we took the train to Harajuku to check out the goth/l0lita event that takes place on the bridge in front of Meiji jingū. I had been to Harajuku on a Sunday many times and seen some of those girls, but it was the first time that I went over to that bridge. It was fun to walk around the bridge, not in a way much different than at the flea market earlier, and watch the girls posing for anyone with a camera.

Original costume? Not quite, a few meters away was a girl with the exact same...This girl just kept hugging her friend's arm for the whole time

I first heard of Harajuku girls from that song as well and wondered what they were so i did a search and came across this site and also this info :

Harajuku is an entertainment and shopping district in Tokyo famed for its colorful, over-the-top teenagers who dress up to see and be seen. A hotbed of creative self-expression, the area has spawned looks and performers that have changed the face of fashion all over Japan.

Trust Stefani to import the Harajuku sense of style to the States. She's even dedicated a track - "Harajuku Girls" - on her album to the new posse. The refrain includes the lyrics, "You've got the wicked style, I like the way that you are, I am your biggest fan."

"That became my muse for the entire album ... thinking about these Harajuku girls," Stefani told MTV's "The Leak."

So, the Harajuku Girls are punk/goth girls who hang out at a spot in Harajuku Tokyo!
I Think I Will Dedicate A Web Site To The Harajuku Girls!!

www.freewebs.com/GirlsOfHarajuku

Check It Out Soon!

I Just Wanted To Say I Love This Site, Love The PIX!!

I read the lyrics and I don't think she's talking about the goth/1olita girls who hang out in Harajuku on Sundays, but about Harajuku fashion in general.

Hey i'm a teenage "expat" living in tokyo, and i live in shibuya, a shopping district much like harajuku, but with "shibuya girls" instead. Anyway, growing up and living next to these harajuku and shibuya girls, ive gotten pretty used to them, and was surpised with stefani chose to dedicate practically a whole ablumn to them!
Anyway, harajuku girls are a bunch of teenaged, usually school girls, who hang out near the meiji shrine over the weekends. i wanted to find out why they chose to do that...but my japaense girl friends had no clue why. they love posing for pictures with tourists, and someone suggested that they make themselves up soheavily so that their own parents would not recognize them when they walk by!
Anyways, the girls trailing behind gwen are definately not the gothic harajuku girls..i agree shes talking more about the mix and match fashion scene in harajuku.
if you have more questions, dont hesistate to email me at sixfeet2deep@hotmail.com
im no expert in the field, but i can always do some "on site research for you!"
