Music TAKANAKA Masayoshi madness!

Today I came across a closing record store which was having a crazy sale. You could fill up a box with as much as would fit in... for 1000yen!

Unfortunately, the plunderers had already passed so there was not much interesting stuff left, but the large section of TAKANAKA Masayoshi vinyls seemed about untouched! I was able to pick up a good pile of his old albums.

- An Insatiable High (1977)
- Brazilian Skies (1978)
- Jolly Jive (1979)
- T-Wave (1980)
- Finger Dancin' (1980)
- Alone (1981)
- Ocean Breeze (1982)
- Saudade (1982)
- Horizon Dream Vol. 2 (1982)
- Can I Sing? (1983)
- natsu zen kai (1984)
- Traumatic (1985)
- Jungle Jane (1986)
- Rendez-vous (1987)

TAKANAKA Masayoshi is a famous Japanese guitarist. If you don't know him read this English biography.

Most of his stuff I've heard so far is very good! It always has a sort of happy/sunny feeling. Now with my new collection I can get more familiar with his works. :)

i know; i'm almost a year behind the times, but i just found your blog. have you enjoyed the mayayoshi takanaka music that you found? oh, how i envy you! i only have two CDs of his, and one video. his music is darned near impossible to get here in the US, at least in the neck of the woods that i am in. have you, by chance, copied any of the vinyl onto either tape or CD? if so, could i possibly beg, plead, or whatever else is necessary to ask you to copy them for me? i would gladly provide you with the necessary media. oh, you are so very lucky! he's phenomenal. enjoy!

I've enjoyed them very much! I didn't digitize or copy any of them so far though.

If you're interested in buying his CDs new, I recommend buying from Amazon Japan.
Many of his older albums like the ones I found are available at about ¥1500 (about $13USD).

Also, my used CD shop Tokyo Recohan sometimes stocks some used CDs of his, but that only happens rarely since there's not much availability.

Hi Patrick

I'm a fan of Takanaka too. It was way back in 1983 I first heard him. Got a couple of his cassettes but lost some due to own carelessness and beginning to regret it. By the way, I'm from Malaysia and used to live in the States for a couple of years. I agree with ladyleadfoot, this guy's phenomenal!!! I plan to write an article on him in a local music magazine and hope one day he'll come to Malaysia and play in his very own concert. Cheers!

Halo everyone... I like Takanaka's style of playing guitar. I've been looking for his guitar tabs online but i never come across one. Does anyone know how can i get it online?

Posted by Caleb on December 17, 2005 at 21:44

I don't know about online tabs, Japanese music fans don't share as much tabs or lyrics online as is done in other countries, so they're not as likely.

If you'd like to buy scores, these two books are currently available at Amazon Japan.

If you want to find Takanaka CD's, you can find them on the following website. They have what I believe is Masyoshi Takanaka's entire collection. He is truly an incredible guitarist. I wish I could have the opportunity to see him in concert. I have three of his concert videos, lots of vinyl and CD's. Here is the URL. Enjoy!

Hey Patrick,
Thanks for the info on your chipple.net site. My name is William Acuna and I previously posted to your site regarding on-line Takanaka music purchases. On your site, you listed a couple of music books and where to buy them. Do you have any way of knowing if those books are in English or Japanese. I am absolutely dying for some Takanaka guitar sheet music or books, but being from California, they would need to be English. I'm bilingual, but Japanese is not my other language. LOL... Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The two links I had posted have since sold out, but they have been reissued last year. The books are in Japanese, but they're music books that also include guitar tablatures, so if you can read music and tabs you probably don't have to worry about being able to read the music. They also include a play-along CD.

Here are the links to the reissued books at Amazon Japan:

I hope this helps! :)

Hi Patrick,

Thank you so very much for the links. I ordered both books from Amazon.

I would like to purchase (if possible) a DVD of The Rainbow Goblins Story, live at Budokan, by Masayoshi Takanaka, this concert was originally recorded on Pioneer Laser Disc.

There's a series of two DVD's titled "The Rainbow Goblins Story II", of a Budokan show held on September 5, 1997. This was previously released on VHS and LaserDisc in December 1997.

These are being released on November 9, 2011. Here are links to buying them online.
